Augustin Lesage, a French painter, began his career when one night spirits came to him and said “The voices you heard were real. You will be a painter. Fear not, and heed our advice. You will find it ridiculous in the beginning, but we are the ones tracing through your hand. Do not try to understand.” These spirits told him where to buy all the materials and how to paint via automatic writing. Some art historians say that the spirits talking to him may have been the effect of schizophrenia.

“Around 1910, a patient at State Lunatic Asylum No. 3 in Navada, Missouri, who referred to himself as THE ELECTRIC PENCIL, executed 283 drawings in ink, pencil, crayon and colored pencil. The drawings were done on both sides of 140 consecutively number ledger pages, each bearing the name of the hospital. They were sewn into a hand made fabric and leather album”.
